Maryland Engineering Students Layout Food stuff Adhesive – NBC4 Washington

If your burrito-wrapping capabilities are not very restaurant-all set, a group of Maryland school pupils may well have a option: burrito tape.

An all-woman workforce of Johns Hopkins College undergraduates offered a style and design for what they connect with Tastee Tape at an engineering university presentation earlier this thirty day period. The foodstuff-grade adhesive is meant to hold fillings in a burrito, taco, gyro or wrap. The scholar designers say the tape is edible, risk-free and strong, and can be applied throughout cooking or use.

Pupil Erin Walsh had the original idea for Tastee Tape although brainstorming for a product or service design and style class, she stated Tuesday.

“One of my favourite foods is burritos and wraps. I’m a pupil-athlete, so I’m not hunting to make a skimpy burrito. I’m actually trying to fill it with material, and so I would tend to get disappointed when I would be hoping to wrap it and the contents would be obtaining almost everywhere,” she mentioned.

Walsh and fellow chemical and biomolecular engineering learners Marie Eric, Tyler Guarino and Rachel Nie studied adhesives and labored on a prototype for the total school yr.

Tastee Tape has no texture or taste, Nie reported. The students built the tape in strips a fifty percent-inch to 2 inches extensive, affixed to sheets of waxed paper. To use a strip, you pull it off the sheet, moist it to activate the adhesive and use it.

They declined to say what the tape is manufactured of for the reason that they’re operating with university officials to use for a patent.

The pupils reported they aren’t certain if they’ll launch a startup to provide their product or service — they are about to graduate and have employment and graduate applications lined up. But they reported they would be open to promoting the patent down the line.

“There’s practically nothing like this product on the current market. We are the only edible tape,” Nie claimed.

Right after observing substantial interest in Tastee Tape, Nie mentioned she thinks there is a much larger lesson: “Never disregard foolish ideas.”
