MIT-Northpond Program developed to advance innovation in engineering and lifetime sciences | MIT News
MIT College of Engineering and Northpond Ventures nowadays introduced the launch of the MIT-Northpond Program — Advancing Life Science and Engineering Innovation. The five-yr engagement is funded by way of Northpond Labs, the analysis and growth-targeted affiliate of Northpond Ventures. The plan aims to deliver ideas in the life sciences by connecting Northpond’s professional enterprise cash buyers with MIT’s scientific entrepreneurs, advancing commercialization via close mentorship and collaboration.
Centered within the Division of Biological Engineering, the method will recognize MIT researchers participating in evidence-of-notion research initiatives in the spots of diagnostics, R&D solutions, platforms for therapeutic alternatives, biomanufacturing, and synthetic intelligence and software program for procedure collection, all with the purpose of commercializing their thoughts.
“This distinctive system was established with the intent to pair unbelievable breakthroughs in engineering and biology with revolutionary entrepreneurial and business enterprise possibilities. There is large likely for the MIT-Northpond Application to influence human well being by accelerating and commercializing visionary breakthroughs in engineering and daily life science,” suggests Anantha P. Chandrakasan, dean of the MIT College of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The MIT-Northpond System will guidance postdocs doing work at the intersection of engineering and lifetime science, in addition to offering mentorship for faculty and students. The system will also give funding to the College of Engineering for its perform in the lifestyle sciences.
“We are honored to be a aspect of this extraordinary collaboration and to have the option to give our faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and college students performing at the intersection of engineering and biology, with the probability to drive fundamental modify and impact,” says Angela Belcher, head of the Department of Organic Engineering, the James Mason Crafts Professor of Biological Engineering and Components Science, and member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Most cancers Investigation.
The MIT-Northpond System will include:
- funding of up to five translational research assignments for every year, transferring from proof-of-concept to commercialization
- assist of two postdocs in the Department of Biological Engineering every single year via the University of Engineering’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Application for Excellence, with an emphasis on underrepresented teams, such as ladies, even though two faculty mentors also get help and
- discretionary help to the Faculty of Engineering for important perform and enhancements in the everyday living sciences.
“We have a shared mission and eyesight to promote and progress science and engineering and to make a marked affect on humanity. We see ourselves as a portion of an ecosystem with the prospective to advance engineering, science, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” states Michael Rubin, founder and CEO of Northpond Ventures, who will also provide as a browsing scholar in the Division of Biological Engineering.
Ernest Fraenkel will provide as college direct for the MIT-Northpond System. Fraenkel is a professor in the Section of Biological Engineering and a member of the Pc Science and Synthetic Intelligence Laboratory and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. The application will also contain a joint steering committee, comprised of customers from both equally MIT and Northpond, wherever Belcher and Rubin will serve as co-chairs.
“Through this software, we can deliver transformational entrepreneurial and company chances to MIT’s extraordinary engineering and science talent,” states Sharon Kedar, co-founder and spouse of Northpond Ventures. “Together, we will be equipped to effect humanity.”
